Far Horizons Offshore Sailing & Seamanship School provides
adventurous, self-seeking individuals a serious opportunity to make their
yearning for learning to sail a reality. The five day,
41 hour course in basic sailing and survival is taught both in a classroom setting and on one of a fleet of Coast
Guard certified, 30 to 40 foot sloops. The comprehensive, interactive classes are limited to six students
to allow for individual instruction and
cover Boat Familiarization, Nautical Terminology, Basic Knots, Maritime
Law &
Rules of the Road, Emergency Equipment & Procedures, Safety & Survival,
Radio Procedures, Dead Reckoning Navigation, Boat Handling, & Maintenance.
Most of these subjects are taught on land & applied
during three days of unrehearsed, wet and wild offshore sailing. An overnight
sail becomes your final exam.
It should be understood that Far Horizons School is not for fun and pleasure, it is for
adventure. Students will be put in various real-life situations & will get
tired, cold, wet, sore, sun burned, and be required to stand watch when
they would rather be sleeping. Students will float around in water, supported
by no more than a few ounces of safety material, and assist in rescuing
classmates in the water. But have no fear, you will love every minute
of it! Classes will be held fair weather or foul, only being canceled in
the event of a hurricane.
Students will not only attain knowledge, they will gain confidence in
their own individual abilities both as a mariner and a person. They
will graduate the class with a sense of accomplishment and will be prepared
to handle the unexpected at sea.
Far Horizons operates year-round, offers group discounts and accepts
most major credit cards: VISA, Master Card, Discover, and American Express.
Reservations are required so please call us at (305) 538-7203 to guarantee your seat.
